Vasospasm is a major medical complication that occurs in a delayed fashion for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients. It is the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality following ruptured cerebral aneurysms. Health care teams must be very aware of this potentially devastating medical complication as vasospasm can result in significant neurological deficits. Nurses play an integral and vital role in identifying often initially subtle neurological changes that occurs in patients suffering from vasospasm.
This presentation will review the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, prevention, monitoring and treatment of cerebral vasospasm. Nursing assessment and implications for this patient population will be covered and case studies will be integrated to review and demonstrate the content discussed.
